Visiting Artist Lecture and Workshop – Nicely Hall 408
November 11th 3:30-6:00 pm
Ms. Maya Zankoul, MISTD graduated in 2007 with a B.A. in Graphic Design from Notre Dame University, Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon. In February 2009, after working in commercial design (branding and web design mainly), Ms. Zankoul decided to create the blog, ‘amalgam’, of illustrations/comics around personal themes of social criticism. A collection of comics from the blog were compiled into a book of the same name, that was launched in August 2009. Zankoul also volunteers with NGO Youth For Tolerance, creating daily comics around political criticism for their portal maw2af.org to promote awareness among Lebanese youth.
The lecture & workshop:
The lecture will focus on the use of illustration/art/design to make social/political changes, and the importance of social media (blogging) for artists to interact with their society. The themes will be social & political problems in Lebanon and how to deal with them using visual communication, as well as the image of the woman in Lebanese advertising vs. reality. The workshop will promote the use of drawing for self-improvement, self-knowledge, and for a better understanding/improvement of our surroundings.
